Lymphedema Treatment
Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy has become the leading choice in treating lymphedema. Originally developed in Europe, it has replaced the traditional method of using pumps in the United States. The application of Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy requires specialized training by a certified lymphatic therapist that our facility offers. There are five components of this treatment:
- Manual lymph drainage: a specialized gentle massage that redirects the lymphatic fluid back into the lymphatic pathways.
- Medical Compression Bandaging: short stretch bandages are used in a specific wrapping technique designed to push the lymph fluid away from limbs and back towards the body.
- Skin Care: low ph moisturizers are used to enhance skin elasticity and cold laser therapy is used to promote wound healing.
- Lymphedema Exercises: these exercises are designed to create a muscle pump which facilitates lymph flow away from extremities.
- Compression Garments: knee-high or thigh-high compression stockings are used to maintain the redirected lymph fluid.
