EPAT/Shockwave therapy

How EPAT Works Inside the Body

When the pressure waves from EPAT reach the injured tissue, they encourage new blood flow and accelerate the repair of tendons and soft tissue.

This process reduces inflammation, breaks down scar tissue, and promotes natural healing. Over time, patients often notice less pain, better function, and greater mobility.

Conditions That Benefit From EPAT

Therapists at Trinity Rehab often recommend EPAT for conditions that do not fully improve with standard physical therapy alone, such as:

What to Expect During Your EPAT Sessions

EPAT is done right in our office, with no anesthesia, no incisions, and no recovery time afterward. Your therapist applies a small amount of gel to the area, then moves a handheld applicator over it while it delivers gentle pressure waves. Each session usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Most people need a short series of visits — commonly three to five sessions spaced about a week apart — so the tissue has time to respond and heal between treatments. Many patients feel a difference within the first few sessions, and the fullest benefit usually develops over the following weeks as your body continues to repair itself.

Because EPAT is non-invasive, you can return to your normal day right away. Some people notice mild, temporary soreness, redness, or slight swelling in the area for a day or two — similar to how you might feel after a good workout.

Is EPAT Right for You?

EPAT is often a good fit when pain from a tendon or soft-tissue injury has stuck around despite rest, activity changes, or a course of traditional therapy — and for people who would rather avoid injections or surgery if they can. EPAT may be worth a conversation if you have:

  • Pain that has lasted weeks or months and hasn’t fully responded to conservative care
  • A tendon or soft-tissue problem such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles, elbow, or shoulder tendinopathy
  • A goal of avoiding cortisone injections or surgery
  • A preference for a treatment with no downtime

EPAT isn’t right for everyone. We review your health history first and may suggest a different approach if you are pregnant, take blood-thinning medication, or have a blood-clotting disorder, an active infection, or a tumor near the area to be treated. The simplest way to find out is a quick evaluation with one of our licensed therapists.
